It’s a good idea to establish some core slack channels, which you expect everyone to be part of. We should give these a prefix of core-
(see Slack Channel Prefixes) so they stay together in the sidebar. Here are some suggestions…
Channel | Purpose |
core-announcements | Company-wide announcements which everyone must see. These should usually be @channel messages. In large Slacks you might want to limit who can post in here. |
core-general | Messages which everyone might want to see. This should usually be an open channel where anyone can post. |
core-random | Random (probably non-work) chatter. |
core-morning | A place for everyone to say good morning to each other. This helps folks feel a bit more like they’re walking into an office in the morning, and a bunch of 👋 emoji on your “Good morning” message is a great way to start the day. |
core-shoutouts | A place to share appreciation for others. Messages should usually take the form “Shoutout to @Someone for XYZ”. This is a great way to show appreciation for others in public. |
core-welcome | A place to welcome new starters to the company, and for everyone else to welcome them in the thread. It should usually be the new starter’s line manager who posts in here. |
core-sharing | A place to share work you’re proud of with the wider company. This might be a demo or a document or pitch you wrote, or a request for feedback from other departments. It’s a great way to share work across departments and keep everyone excited about the company’s progress. |
